Pocket Saints -St. Clare of Assisi-Quilters and Needle Workers

Saint Clare of Assisi

Patroness of Quilters and Needle Workers

Clara was well born. She heard St. Francis preach and was so moved by him that she followed him. He placed her in a convent. Eventually she established the Poor Clares who lived a simple life of poverty and seclusion. She emulated and cared for Francis whom she saw as a profound spiritual teacher.

St. Clare's words: “Go forth in peace, for you have followed the good road. Go forth without fear, for he who created you has made you holy, has always protected you, and loves you as a mother. Blessed be you, my God, for having created me.”

Retablos are a devotional folk art form from Mexico and the Southwest US. They are small paintings on wood of Catholic saints and angels. To create these affordable heart-felt paintings of saints, angels and blessings, Lynn Garlick hand carves and paints her original designs on the traditionally used ponderosa pine planks. Then she decoupages high quality prints of her originals onto pine boards, in an old school technique used for the Italian altar screens of medieval Europe.
